SUMMARY
This paper represents an initial contribution to a broader research project that the Centro Speleologico Etneo has been conducting for several years in the city and province of Catania to identify ancient water supply and transport systems.
Two underground conduits are presented here; they are notable for having been excavated beneath ancient lava flows that rest upon a pre-existing clay substrate.
One of these is a water tunnel located just outside Paternò, which has been explored and surveyed. Based on certain construction features, it is likely a qanat — which we have named the "Qanat dell'Abbaino"— and its course passes through a small underground chamber resembling a tholos.
A second structure, the "Qanat di Cifali," is an ancient underground water supply system for the city of Catania that currently continues to feed an old covered washhouse and various vegetable gardens.
